Government by Wishful Thinking

Another masterful piece by Steven den Beste.

[More:]

Far from being insulted by being labelled a materialist by Steven, I agree with him that many religious people, and almost all evangelical Christians, acknowledge that we are "materialists" in the sense that he defines the term. In fact, Christian thinkers correctly make a distinction between Deistic Materialism and Secular Materialism. Though the beliefs in origins differ, both agree that the world is separate from us and normally manifests consistent enough behavior that it can be predicted and manipulated.

Personally, the teleologist liberals appear to me as believers in a corrupted form of Bhuddism that regards the world as an illusory projection of our minds, but instead of undertaking exercises to escape the illusion, these liberals believe that the illusion can be changed by changing the mind.

There are too many bastards in the world for me to keep track of. In response to this, God has proposed to keep track of who is deserving of punishment in this life, and promises to page me when He needs me to take out specific individuals. Since I have reason to believe that my spiritual pager is more sensitive than 90% of those held by church leaders, and have noticed that God does not give any task to anyone without promising divine aid and power to carry it out, I find this a mutually satisfactory arrangement that permits me to place my attention on more important matters closer to hand, while retaining the pleasant knowledge that Divine Justice will have its way. Eventually.
