Far from being insulted by being labelled a materialist by Steven, I agree with him that many religious people, and almost all evangelical Christians, acknowledge that we are "materialists" in the sense that he defines the term. In fact, Christian thinkers correctly make a distinction between Deistic Materialism and Secular Materialism. Though the beliefs in origins differ, both agree that the world is separate from us and normally manifests consistent enough behavior that it can be predicted and manipulated.
Personally, the teleologist liberals appear to me as believers in a corrupted form of Bhuddism that regards the world as an illusory projection of our minds, but instead of undertaking exercises to escape the illusion, these liberals believe that the illusion can be changed by changing the mind.
