What happened????

The site went offline for several days, first to upgrade to SDSL, the second due to a programming error and consequent problems with restoring the system from a backup. I backed up what I could, then made a fresh install that upgraded the operating system to Red Hat Version 8.0, and the webserver to Apache 2.

I've always known I needed a good backup system. (been there, done that, got the scars to prove it.) I also had that gnawing, from-your-deep-spirit sort of unease about the state of the backup, but unwisely ignored it (still needing to take seriously my own exhortations about extra-dimensional warfighting).

At least, I learned more about the shortcomings of Linux backup tools than I cared to in a short period of time. And I was able to upgrade the OS!

We're finally on an SDSL line! This means uploads will be faster now! I can already tell a difference, and hope that I can soon (in 6 months) upgrade the server board.

Update: 04/25/03 Availability of the SDSL line is patchy due to problems that have been traced back to the BellSouth local exchange building. No surprise that the employees of a former monopolist continue to act as if their employer was still a monopoly.
